The City of Calgary is hosting a public drop-in information session about the University of Calgary Area Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement Project on Wednesday October 21st from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Triwood Hall. The project will be presented in conjunction with the Brentwood Transit Oriented Development/ Mobility Assessment and Plan.

Here is a brief summary of the project:

The University of Calgary Area Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvement Project aims to plan and implement new or improved pedestrian and bicycle facilities in order to increase walking and cycling directness, convenience, safety and comfort for all. Target areas were chosen based on insufficient pedestrian and bicycle facilities and demonstrated demand such as high pedestrian and bicycle volumes, citizen requests, and informal trails. The timing and scope of the construction depends on the availability of funding, resources and coordination with other processes and projects. The construction might need to be phased over several years and is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2010.

The City is considering improvements to the following routes as shown in the attached drawing (pdf).

• 32nd Avenue NW: Home Road to Crowchild Trail
• Charleswood Drive NW: Crowchild Trail to John Laurie Boulevard
• 24th Avenue NW: Collegiate Road to 24th Street
• 37th Street NW: 32nd Avenue to Crowchild Trail
• Northland Drive NW: Crowchild Trail to 52nd Avenue
• University Drive NW: 13th Avenue to 24th Avenue
